Landscaping Update!

With the break in the weather, I felt compelled to hit the home hardware store to finish off a few projects on my to-do list. Since installing Skookum last year, I have been thinking about the landscaping around the structure. I contacted my good friend Paula (who happens to also be a landscape architect :) and asked her for her suggestions as to what plants would work well in the area. I also needed the design to be low maintenance.

I initially wanted to go with flowering plants but remembered reading a few little library horror stories where bees and wasps took up residence in the structure. I thought about using different ornamental grasses but failed to find ones that could take full sun all day. Paula also suggested sedums and fortunately I was able to find these wonderful beds of multi-colored plants. I'm keeping my fingers crossed they only attract butterflies! I also placed a few "hens and chicks" around the base:

To combat the muddy entrance to Skookum, I purchased four eco-friendly pavers made of recyclable tires. Initially, I wanted to use flagstones but the installation process was too laborious. These eco-pavers were very quick and easy to set. Now visitors have a clean and comfortable surface to walk on:

The project is still under construction. I think I may add another two pavers and a small boxwood hedge on the right. We'll see how the area evolves over time. If you have any suggestions or comments, please feel free to share your thoughts below.

Cheers,

Jacqueline

April Fools!

Yah! Spring has finally arrived! The sun is beaming and the buds are blooming. Skookum is stocked with the classic The Velveteen Rabbit as well as Benjamin's Treasure, Pictures from our Vacation, Nature's Art Box, and the beautifully illustrated The Last Alchemist. I'm a sucker for great illustrations and picked this up at the Clearbrook Library Book Sale last year.

Here's a peek inside:

And it looks like the Judy Moody and Stink books are a hit! So, I've included volumes 3 and 4 for those following along:

Skookum's pail is loaded with April treats. Take one or two if it interests you!

For adults! I've included a few books on gardening and landscape design. Golfers may be interested in Deepak Chopra's approach in Golf for Enlightenment. Shutter Island, Birds of Prey, and No Goodbyes are also included.

Enjoy the sun!

Cheers,

Jacqueline
